PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Karowe Underground Project is being carried out by Karowe Diamond Mine in the Boteti district. The mine is owned by Lucara Botswana (Pty) Ltd, which is a subsidiary of Lucara Corp. Following the completion of open pit operations, expected in the year 2025, the mine plans to transition to underground mining methods to extract the diamond ore and thereby increase the life of mine by approximately 13 years.

The scope of the project span engineering, procurement, and construction to support the development of a new underground mine. The project involves the construction of two mine shafts, Production and Ventilation shafts, with the Production shaft being used to transport personnel and material in and out of the mine (including services; electrical, water etc.) whilst the Ventilation shaft will be used primarily as a ventilation exhaust shaft and also serve as an emergency access point. Lateral development is scheduled to commence in the year 2025.  An extensive grouting programme was carried out to prevent flows of underground water into the development as several underground fissures were intercepted during the sinking process, especially in the sandstone formations.

The underground mine development is supported by a range of surface infrastructure projects that include a 200-person contractor’s camp, office buildings, winder buildings & existing mine infrastructure upgrades. Furthermore, a 26 km 220kV transmission lines complete with substations and associated electrical infrastructure has been commissioned to meet the electrical demands of the new underground mine and development.

The project therefore covered a wide spectrum of different contracts ranging from building infrastructure development, civil construction, mining, mechanical and electrical works.

The provision of Quantity Surveying Services by Vonwich (Pty) Ltd for the Karowe Underground Project includes but is not limited to.
